South Portland police launch crime mapping program

Want to know where crime happens in South Portland?
That's now possible since the South Portland Police Department has launched a new online crime mapping program.
The free online tool allows residents to search the maps for information about crime in a geographic area, according to a press release, and is the same tool that law enforcement agencies have used to visualize crime data. The goal behind the mapping program is that with better information available to the public, it will lead to more awareness, communication and prevent crime.
"We hope this will allow our residents, visitors and business owners to be better informed about criminal activities and trends, so they can make the most informed decisions about their safety," said Lt. Frank Clark, in a press release.
The mapping service can be accessed at www.southportland.org/pd or www.raidsonline.com.
