Police identify suspects in Yarmouth robbery, car crash

Police have identified two suspects in a robbery at the Rite Aid store in Yarmouth whose vehicle crashed on Interstate 295 in Freeport Wednesday. The suspects are Dylan Libby, 21, and passenger Madeline Damon, 18, both from North Yarmouth, Maine State Police reported. The two had recently moved to Bangor.
The crash followed a robbery at the Rite Aid store in Yarmouth and the car was being chased by Yarmouth Police when the driver lost control attempting to exit Interstate 295 at Mallett Drive, police said.
Troopers said the driver both were hospitalized with multiple injuries. Yarmouth Police are expected to file charges in connection with the robbery in the near future, police reported.
"This week's pharmacy robbery at the Rite Aid in Yarmouth was the fourth of the year in the state, a remarkable decline from last year, when there was more than one a week," noted Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland in his Communicator bulletin. There were 56 pharmacy robberies in Maine during 2012 and 24 robberies in 2011, he reported. One possible reason for this year's fewer robberies may be that the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office are beginning to prosecute the robbers in federal court, McCausland reported.

Rapist on run from Mass. arrested in Gorham

A convicted rapist on the run from Massachusetts since 1978 was captured at his home in Gorham Wednesday evening, law enforcement officials reported.3-29-GPD-Irving-Gary
Gary A. Irving, a wanted fugitive from justice, had been living in Gorham under an assumed identity, Gregg A. Irving, since 2002, police said. The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate this case.
Three Maine Troopers assisted a dozen of their counterparts from Massachusetts who tracked down Irving to his home Wednesday night at 151 South St., according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.
Irving, who had lived in Gorham since the early 1980s by the name, Gregg Irving, had been featured on "America's Most Wanted," "Unsolved Mysteries," and "Real Stories of the Highway Patrol," McCausland reported. "Massachusetts police had followed leads from all over the country and one of their investigators had just returned from Florida. Maine State Police will now review any unsolved sexual assault cases based on new information from Irving's capture," he reported in his Communicator bulletin.
On Wednesday at 8:23 p.m. Gorham Police Department received a call to assist the Massachusetts State Police and the Maine State Police with the apprehension of Gregg, according to Gorham Police Lt. Christopher E. Sanborn.
The Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section had identified Irving as Irving, Sanborn reported. Irving was wanted on a Massachusetts Superior Court Warrant which charged him with three counts of rape, kidnapping and unnatural acts stemming from an incident which occurred in 1978. Irving was convicted in Massachusetts and subsequently fled the jurisdiction.
The Gorham Police Department was contacted by the Maine State Police and Massachusetts State Police Units and all three agencies located, identified and arrested Irving at his home without incident, Sanborn said. Massachusetts State Police Detectives confirmed Irving's identity, he said. Irving was later transported to the Cumberland County Jail by the Maine State Police and charged as a fugitive from justice. Irving is scheduled to be arraigned at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland on March 29 at 1 p.m.
