Arts project, neighborhood association team up to plant sunflowers

More than 20,000 Aztec sunflower seeds have been distributed to homes in East Bayside and they're going to get planted on Saturday.
The East Bayside Neighborhood Association, the city of Portland and the Art at Work program worked together to distribute the seeds and plan Saturday's planting session, according to a press release..
The sunflower planting project was designed to build a better sense of community in the city's East Bayside neighborhood.
The flowers won't just be popping up in residents' lawns and gardens but also open spaces throughout the neighborhood.
The planting will start Saturday at 9 a.m. in Peppermint Park, which is at the corner of Cumberland Avenue and Smith Street.
The flowers are expected to be in full bloom in time for the Sept. 29 neighborhood open house.
