Apricot trees can thrive in Portland as well as Turkey

Editor,
Cliff Gallant's most recent column ("When cars no longer dominate," Friday, Aug. 3) mentions his surprising discovery of an apricot tree on Munjoy Hill.
That tree on Congress Street was planted many years ago by a man who did some research and learned that apricot trees thrive in Turkey in a climate quite similar to Portland's.
The tree has been very productive for many years despite neglect and very little soil area.
Apricots are, of course, very nutritious and delicious, and hopefully Mr. Gallant's column will inspire others on Munjoy Hill and in other neighborhoods to plant some of these productive trees.
Jeff Tarling, Portland's arborist, may be able to help.
Thanks.
